Data-intensive radio astronomy is a term that even non-astronomers at AIfA (like me) are familiar with. What it actually means is pretty much what it says: Data volumes of up to 1 TB per day are no longer uncommon in (radio) astronomy. This amount of data that is almost too large to store and that we cannot analyze manually. Machines, code and pipelines are companions and tools in modern astronomy.
MARVIN is the name of the high-performance computer at the High Performance Computing (HPC) portal, which has been available to researchers at the University of Bonn since spring 2024. - It is currently one of the most powerful academic supercomputers in Germany.
On June 19, a group of interested AIfA members had the opportunity to visit MARVIN at the HPC facility. Here are some photos from the visit.
