On the evening of August 12, 2026, more than 1,000 astronomy enthusiasts gathered at the Argelander- Institute to experience and observe the partial solar eclipse together.
In collaboration with the Volkssternwarte Bonn and the Max-Planck-Institute for Radio Astronomy, the institute offered the opportunity to observe the solar eclipse live through telescopes set up in front of the Astronomy Building in Bonn-Endenich. At the same time, the lecture hall featured live streams from locations along the path of totality, as well as expert presentations providing all the necessary information about the eclipse.
Despite the large crowd, the atmosphere was excellent under a clear and sunny evening sky. “We were impressed by the high level of interest. It was a wonderful, peaceful, and above all, communal experience,” said co-organizer PD Dr. Jürgen Kerp of the Argelander-Institute.
The next total solar eclipse will take place as early as August 2, 2027. However, the coverage of the sun in Bonn will then be only about half of what was visible on August 12, 2026.
